(March 30, 2026) — As San Diego welcomes the 2026 Indian Gaming Association Conference & Tradeshow, we gather not only to discuss the future of tribal gaming, but to reflect on a remarkable journey—one rooted in resilience, sovereignty, and opportunity.
The passage of the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act in 1988 marked a turning point in modern tribal history. It affirmed the inherent right of tribal nations to govern economic activity on their lands and created a framework for Indian gaming that has since transformed communities across the country. What followed was not just the growth of an industry, but the strengthening of tribal self-determination.
For many tribes, gaming has been the foundation upon which broader economic and social progress has been built. It has enabled tribal governments to invest in essential services—healthcare, education, housing, and infrastructure—that many communities had long been denied. Just as importantly, the success of tribal gaming has extended beyond reservation boundaries, supporting regional economies, creating jobs, and fostering partnerships that benefit both tribal and non-tribal communities alike.
The Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation stands as one example of this transformation.
Our journey began humbly in 1983 with high-stakes bingo. At the time, few could have imagined the path ahead. Today, we proudly reflect on multiple generations of leadership that have carried forward a vision grounded in responsibility to our people and our future. Through tribal government gaming, we have been able to reinvest in our community in meaningful and lasting ways—buying back ancestral lands, building homes for our people, and developing medical clinics and vital infrastructure that support the well-being of our members.
But our story does not stop with gaming.
True sovereignty means not only building success but sustaining it. That is why we have worked to diversify our economic base, ensuring long-term stability for future generations. A clear recent example is our historic co-ownership investment in San Diego FC, the region’s Major League Soccer expansion team. This step reflects both our commitment to economic growth and our deep connection to the broader San Diego community.
Equally important is our responsibility to give back. For generations, the Kumeyaay people have understood the value of community and stewardship. Today, that tradition continues through our support of nonprofit organizations and community initiatives that strengthen the fabric of San Diego. We believe that when one part of our region thrives, we all thrive.
The story of tribal government gaming is, at its core, a story of opportunity realized. Given the opportunity, tribes across this nation have not only endured—they have flourished. Gaming has been a powerful catalyst, but it is the vision, leadership, and values of tribal nations that have turned that opportunity into lasting progress.
As we celebrate the Indian Gaming Association Conference here in San Diego—on the ancestral lands of the Kumeyaay—we recognize both how far we have come and the responsibility we carry moving forward. The future of Indian Country is bright, and it is one defined not only by economic success, but by cultural strength, community investment, and shared prosperity.
Tribal government gaming has proven to be more than an industry. It has been a turning point—one that continues to create opportunity not just for Native American communities, but for all San Diegans.
