At this year’s Indian Gaming Association (IGA) Tradeshow & Convention, we had the opportunity to catch up with Chairman Rodney Butler of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation. The conversation focused on innovation, future growth, and how technology is reshaping the landscape for Tribal gaming.
Chairman Butler discussed how his Nation’s early investment in internet gaming, sports betting, and social platforms helped them stay ahead of the curve. “We knew we needed to grow beyond the walls of Foxwoods,” he shared. “That’s what led us to the success we’re seeing today with WONDR NATION and our online platforms.”
He encouraged other Tribes to consider starting with social gaming, especially those just beginning to explore digital opportunities. Their data shows that players who engage online often visit in person more frequently, deepening their connection to the property.
Butler also touched on the challenges and differences in each state when it comes to sports betting and iGaming. For smaller Tribes, understanding market dynamics and starting small can be the best first step.
Beyond the business, he highlighted how expanded online gaming has opened new doors for community investment, particularly in STEM education and outreach. “We’ve always been committed to giving back, and now we’re able to do that across a wider area,” he said.
We’re thankful to Chairman Butler for sharing his vision and leadership. His insights continue to help shape the future of Indian gaming and technology.
