JAMUL, CA (March 18, 2026) – In celebration of International Women’s Day and Women’s History Month, Jamul Casino Resort proudly highlights its commitment to gender equality and empowering women, with a special recognition for Carlene A. Chamberlain, Tribal Secretary and Enrollment Coordinator of the Jamul Indian Village. Under her leadership, the Tribe continues to break glass ceilings, address discrimination and foster opportunities for the next generation of female leaders.
Earlier this month, Jamul Casino Resort formally recognized Chamberlain with the Woman of the Year Award honoring her decades of service, leadership and advocacy on behalf of women in the Tribe and beyond. Since joining the Tribal Council in 1992 and serving as Vice-Chairwoman for over 25 years, Chamberlain continues to trailblaze a traditionally male-dominated environment. She has consistently mentored and encouraged young women of the Tribe to pursue leadership roles, demonstrating a lifelong commitment to supporting women and creating meaningful change within the community.
“Working in a male-dominated field has shaped my journey, but my focus has always been on lifting up the next generation of women in our Tribe,” said Carlene Chamberlain. “I hope my work shows that with guidance, opportunity and support, women can break barriers, lead with confidence and make a lasting impact on their communities.”
In addition to her leadership on the Tribal Council, Chamberlain has served on the Southern Indian Health Council (SIHC) Board of Directors for 20 years, advocating for youth and healthcare access for the American Indian community. Chamberlain was the first female graduate of the Heartland Fire Academy, served as a firefighter at the Sycuan Reservation and worked as a 911 operator for the City of El Cajon before advancing to Fire Dispatch Administrator with the City of San Diego, retiring in 2006 after 27 years of public service. She is known for her deep respect for tribal ancestors and those buried at the community cemetery, as well as her talent for connecting family and community relationships.
Jamul Casino Resort continues to prioritize initiatives that empower women and support gender equity year-round. Through mentorship, community engagement and organizational partnerships, the Resort seeks to advance opportunities for women at every level, reflecting its core values of inclusion, equity and community impact.
