ARLINGTON, WA (October 15, 2026) –The Stillaguamish Tribe of Indians proudly celebrates the 50th anniversary of its federal recognition, marking a historic milestone that honors generations of perseverance, determination, and dedication to preserving the Tribe’s heritage and sovereignty.
To commemorate this significant anniversary, the Stillaguamish Tribe will host a special celebration and traditional potlatch on Sunday, October 18, 2026, at Angel of the Winds Casino Resort in Arlington, Washington. The gathering will bring together Tribal members, elders, families, leaders, and invited guests to reflect on the Tribe’s journey, honor its history, and celebrate the generations who have helped shape its future.
At the heart of this milestone is the legacy of Chief Esther R. Ross, whose unwavering determination and leadership were instrumental in the Tribe’s fight for federal recognition. Her efforts helped secure a future for the Stillaguamish people, laying the foundation for generations to preserve their culture, strengthen their community, and exercise their sovereignty.
This 50th anniversary serves not only as a celebration of federal recognition but also as a tribute to Chief Ross and the many Tribal members who carried forward her vision.
The anniversary celebration will honor the Tribe’s history through traditional ceremonies, cultural performances, and reflections from Tribal leaders and community representatives. The program will include an opening prayer and food blessing, a traditional dance performance, the calling of witnesses, guest speakers, and presentations from Stillaguamish Tribal representatives.
In keeping with the spirit of a traditional potlatch, the gathering will emphasize community, gratitude, and the importance of sharing traditions across generations. Guests will enjoy a selection of traditional foods, including salmon, crab, clams, oysters, and other offerings, alongside a variety of additional dishes.
Throughout the celebration, attendees will have the opportunity to reflect on the Tribe’s accomplishments over the past five decades while recognizing the strength, unity, and cultural traditions that continue to guide the Stillaguamish people.
As the Tribe looks toward the next 50 years, this anniversary stands as a powerful reminder of its enduring resilience and the importance of preserving its history for future generations.
