SACRAMENTO, CA (October 8, 2026) — The California Nations Indian Gaming Association (CNIGA) issued the following statement in response to the announcement that three California Tribal Nations have entered into partnerships with Kalshi to launch prediction market platforms:
“The decision by several California Tribal Nations to partner with Kalshi is disappointing, but it doesn’t change the fact that this activity is still illegal. The Ninth Circuit recognized that Kalshi’s sports-event contracts constitute Class III gaming under the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act and thus violate the law in California. Whoever offers the sports betting contract is irrelevant.
That is why today, 145 Tribes and Tribal organizations filed an amicus brief with the United States Supreme Court reaffirming our opposition to Kalshi and other prediction markets’ blatant violation of tribal sovereignty and our right to control what gaming takes place on our lands. CNIGA respects every Tribal Nation’s sovereign right to pursue economic opportunities for their communities. But the decisions of a few outlier tribes should not come at the expense of another tribe’s sovereign rights.”
