Before taking the spotlight on their own, Sawyer Brown’s original members were part of country artist Don King’s touring band. When King retired in 1981, they formed the group and adopted the Sawyer Brown name before making their debut on the TV show “Star Search.” They went on to win the first season of the competition, scoring the $100,000 grand prize and a recording contract with Capitol Records.
In the years since that claim-to-fame moment, the band has amassed three certified gold albums and 19 Top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot Country Songs list, including the three chart-topping singles “Step That Step,” “Some Girls Do,” and “Thank God For You.” Their talents have garnered achievements ranging from multiple Country Music Television (CMT) Music Awards to the 1996 Academy of Country Music Top Vocal Group Award. Sawyer Brown’s members, on an individual level, have also succeeded in an array of endeavors, such as helping launch the career of Christian rock band Casting Crowns, playing in a symphony at Carnegie Hall, owning a recording studio, and producing several movies.
